Allen Redfern was born on 27th October 1894 in Buxton he was baptised in Buxton on 16th December 1894 and was the son of Ralph Redfern a stone mason and Annie Elizabeth Redfern née Goodall, of 26, Byron St., Buxton, Derbyshire. His father Ralph was born in 1868 in Longor Staffordshire and his wife Annie Elizabeth Goodall was born in 1868 in Buxton, they were married on 29th December 1892 at St John the Baptist Church, Buxton. They went on to have a total of 11 children , however sadly 1 died in infancy , their surviving children were all born in Buxton and were :- William b1893, Allen b1894, Francis May b1896 Oswald b1899, , Gladys b1899, Lillian b1901, Annie b1903, Ralph b1904, Ernest b1906 and George b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at 26 Byron Street at Buxton, Ralph is 43 yrs of age head of the family and a stone mason he is living with his wife Annie Elizabeth 43 yrs and their 10 children, Allen is 16 yrs of age and a printer.
Lance Corporal Allen Redfern enlisted into the territorial army on 22nd August 1911 at Buxton for a term of 4 years service, he was 17 yrs 1 month of age, he living at 26 Byron Street, Buxton and his next of kin was his mother Annie of the same address, his occupation was that of a printer at the Derbyshire Brewery Company in Buxton. He attend training camps throughout 1911/1912/1913 and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 21st November 1914. At the outbreak of the 'Great War' he was embodied for service. He embarked from Southampton on 28th February 1915, landing at Le Harve the same day and joined the British Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action on 8th March 1915 whilst serving with the 1/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire ) Regiment,and is buried in Ploegsteert Wood Military Cemetery, grave reference I C 6
This man is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council.
