Walter Jones was born in 1883 he was the son of Sampson a fitter in a steel tube company and Charlotte Jones née Lowe of Silk Mill House, South Place, Chesterfield. His father Sampson was born in 1858 at Mansfield, his mother Charlotte Lowe was born in 1858 at Mansfield, they were married in 1880 at Mansfied, they went on to have 9 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 20 South Place, Chesterfield, Smpson 53 yrs a fitter in a steel tube company is living with his wife Charlotte 53 yrs and their children, Harold 25 yrs a carter, Alfred Matthew 14 yrs a steel tube worker and Eveline 12 yrs of age. In the same 1911 census Walter has joined the Army, he is in barracks at Crownhill, Devon with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters.

Military History

Private Walter Jones enlisted on15th February 1910 at Chesterfield, giving his age as 17 yrs and 7 months, his occupation as a baker, posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to India on 19th October 1912 the battalion returning to England on 13th August 1914. However Walter died on 13th August 1914 whilst in Bombay of septic pneumonia and is commemorated on the Kirklee Memorial, India.

Extra Information

ThHis brother Sampson Arthur Jones also served during the Great War, he served with the 2nd battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 21st December 1915 and is buried at Sailly-Sur-La-Lys, Canadian Cemetry, France.is man is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council.
