Herbert was the son of John and Matilda Cumberland (née Lindley). John Cumberland was born in Woodborough, Nottinghamshire, and Matilda in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. They were married at Nottingham St Mary on 7 December 1871 (O/N/D Nottingham). According to the information they provided on the 1911 Census they had had ten children of whom only seven were still living. Their children were born in Clipstone and apart from Winifred and Matilda were baptised at Edwinstowe St Mary: John b. 1872 bap. 10 May 1874 bap. 22 January 1888; Tom b. 10 April 1874 bap. 10 May 1874;, Herbert b. 5 October 1880 bap. 5 December 1880; Jane b. 18 October 1882 bap. 19 November 1882; William b. 20 November 1886 (reg. 1897 J/F/M Southwell) bap. 19 December 1886; Winifred b. Mansfield 4 August 1889 bap. Mansfield St John the Evangelist 8 September 1889 and Matilda Ann b. 2 January 1891 bap. St John 9 September 1894. Their children who died young were Ann b. 10 June 1876 bap. Edwinstowe St Mary 2 July 1876 d. 1885 (J/F/M); George b. 31 March 1878 bap. St Mary 28 April 1878 d. 1885 (J/F/M) and George Harry b. 29 March 1885 bap. St Mary 27 April 1885 d. 1885 (J/A/S). In 1881 John (36) a farmer of 100 acres and his wife Matilda were living at Waterfield House, Clipstone, with their children John (9), Tom (7), Ann (5), George (3) and Herbert (under 1 year). Also in the household was a general domestic servant and a farm servant. Ann and George died four years later in 1885 as did their brother George Harry who had been born earlier that year. Winifred and Matilda were born in 1889 and 1891 respectively. By 1891 the family was living at Dalestorth Farm, Brick Kiln Lane, Mansfield. All seven surviving children were living at home: John described as the farmer's son so presumably assisting on the farm, Tom a sewing machine agent, Herbert, Jane (8), William (4), Winifred (1) and Matilda (under one). Also in the household were two farm servants, agricultural labourers. John snr. was still farming at Dalestorth farm in 1901. Only six of the children were in the home on the night of the census: John described as 'at home', Herbert a butcher, Jane described as 'at home', William, Winifred and Matilda. Tom, a stationary engine driver, was a lodger living at Wilford Crescent East, Meadows, Nottingham. By 1911 the four eldest children were married and only William, Winifred and Matilda were living with their parents on the farm. John Cumberland snr. died on 13 September 1916; he was still at Dalestorth Farm. His widow Matilda died on 19 July 1927; she was then living at Widnhurst, Sutton Road, Mansfield. Tom and William were both executors of their parents' estates. Herbert married Florence Skelton in 1908 and in 1911 they were living at 90 Union Street, Mansfield. He was a milk seller. They were living at 19 Rosemary Street, Mansfield, when Herbert died in 1918. Florence married secondly John Tooth in 1921 and at the time the CWGC record was compiled they were living at 9 Booth Street, Mansfield. Florence died in 1958. Of Herbert's siblings: John married Kate Crampton in 1908. In 1911 they were living at Little Robin's Farm, Skegby, Nottinghamshire; John was a farmer. Tom married Bertha Pateman (b. 8 September 1879) in 1903 and they had a son, Frank (b. 26 March 1906). In 1911 they were living at Broomhill Cottage, Church Warsop, Nottinghamshire; Tom was a sewage disposal works manager. He died on 5 June 1939; he and his wife were then living on Bereweeke Avenue, Winchester. Bertha was living with her married son, Frank, also a sewage works manager, on Garnier Road, Winchester, when the England & Wales Register was compiled later that year. She died in 1956. Jane married Walter Cross (B. 5 May 1882) in 1905. In 1911 she and Walter, a shop assistant, and their daughter Dorothy Winifred (b. 26 July 1906). were living on Albert Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. In 1939 they were living on Rosemary Street, Mansfield; Walter was a grocer. Also in the household was their married daughter Dorothy, a grocer's assistant, and her husband Frank Larkinson, a school teacher. Jane died in 1967. William married Maude H Bluthe in 1916 and they had at least four children. Maude died in 1935. In 1939 William, a farm manager, was living at Manor Farm, Upton, Newark. Also in the home were his children William John (b. 12 February 1917), Joan (b. 22 August 1918), Richard Arthur (b. 12 April 1920) and Michael Peter (b. 28 November 1927). William died in 1961. Winifred married Joseph C Hampshire in 1919. In 1939 she and Joseph (b. 9 May1888) a letter press printer (works manager/partner) were living on Southwell Road West, Mansfield. She died in 1977. Matilda Ann married John Parnham (b. 11 March 1866) in 1927 and in 1939 they were living at Perlethorpe Avenue, Mansfield. Matilda died in 1976.

Herbert was mobilized in January 1917 and posted to the South Staffordshire Regiment. At the time of his death he was serving with the 484th Agricultural Company Labour Corps. Herbert died at the military hospital, Clipstone Camp, from pneumonia and heart trouble on 31 October 1918. He was buried in Mansfield (Nottingham Road) Cemetery with full military honours (grave ref. A. 2570).

We regret to announce the death of Pte. Herbert Cumberland, third son of the late Mr John Cumberland, of Dalestorth, which occurred on Wednesday in the military hospital at Clipstone, where he was removed some days ago. He was well known in Mansfield where he had a milk round for some years. It was in January 1917 that he was called to the colours and posted to the South Staffords, doing his training at Rugeley amongst other places. He was frequently reporting sick, and some time ago was sent back to work on the land. A fortnight ago he became seriously ill, and was removed, as stated, to Clipstone, but there was little hope for him from the first, as he was suffering from pneumonia and heart trouble. Many local dairymen also followed. 'The funeral was conducted with full military honours. Captain Lofthouse, from the Camp, took the service.
