Mother: Emily Coleman in 1901 she was a widow. His father, John Joseph Coleman, had died in 1899 aged only 26. In 1911 Horace and his older brother, John were living with their grandfather, Charles Thrall at 114 Nottingham Road, Mansfield. He was working as a coal miner.
Sapper Horace Coleman, 3rd Provisional Battalion, formerly 185th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers. He landed in France on 21st September 1915, he died at the 1st Western General Hospital, Fazakerley, Liverpool, on 2nd June 1917. He is buried in Mansfield (Nottingham Road) Cemetery.
Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser published 14/06/1917: Military Funeral at Mansfield. Sapper Horace Coleman of Chaucer Street, Mansfield funeral took place at Nottingham Road Mansfield. One of the first volunteers from Mansfield Colliery. He joined the Royal Engineers and served at the Battle of Arras. Horace had been invalided out of the army. This man is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council.
