William was born in 1876 in Gascote Heath, Tamworth and was the son of William a coal miner and of Hankin Street Butler's Hill Hucknall Turkard. His father William was born in 1849 in Wilencote, Warwickshire, he was married twice he married his first wife Mary Ann Dennis in 1869 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford area , they went on to have the following children , Josiah b1870 Hucknall, Thomas b1873, Hucknall, William b1876 Gascote Heath, Annie b1878 Birchmore, Warwickshire, Alfred 1880, Birchmore, Martha b1883 Hucknall. His wife Mary dies in 1887 in Nottingham she was 38 yrs of age. He married his second wife Harriett Whetton, in 1889 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration area, with her he had the following children Mary J b1890 Hucknall, Rosa b1893 Hucknall, Albert b1896 Hucknall and Abner b1897 Hucknall In the 1911 census we find William (jnr) living at 27 Bell Isle Road, Hucknall , he is 35 yrs of age and a coal miner, he is boarding at the address with Frederick Flower 29 yrs a coal miner and his family. At the time of his re-enlistment in Nottingham on 15th August 1914, he was a miner living with his sister Martha Howes, at 29 Belle Isle Road, Hucknall.
Private William Lakin had originally enlisted on 12th November 1894 at Nottingham , he was 19 yrs and 8 months of age and a collier, his next of kin was his father William of 11 Betts Street, Butlers Hill, Hucknall. He served with the Sherwood Foresters in the East Indies 24/12/1896-24/10/99, Malta 25/10/99-28/10/01, South Africa 30/10/01- 26/10/02, he returned to England on 27th October 1902 and left the Army (Notts and Derby Regiment) on 12th November 1906 - Time expired. Following the outbreak of the war he re-enlisted on 15 August 1914 at Nottingham he was by now 38 yrs and 139 days old and was sent to 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was promoted to acting lance corporal but lost the stripe on 26 July 1915 whilst the battalion was in the Gully Ravine Trenches, Helles, Gallipoli for being absent on parade. On 9 August 1915 during the battalion's first battle at Suvla, Gallipoli, he was reported as missing and eventually he was officially listed as wounded and missing in February 1915. He has no known grave and is Commemorated on the Helles memorial, Gallipoli.
