Family History

George William Taylor was born in 1895 at Kiverton Park, Sheffield, he was the son of Benjamin William Taylor a scavenger contractor and Ellen Taylor née Bateman of 93 Southwell Road, Mansfield, . His father Benjamin William Taylor was born in 1871 at Epworth, his mother Ellen Bateman was born in 1875 at Kiverton Park, they were married on 26th November 1894 at St John’s church, Mansfield, they had 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his family are living at 47 Station Road, Cycle Terrace, Kiverton Park, Benjamin William 40 yrs is a scavenger contractor, he is living with his wife Ellen 36 years, and their children, George William 16 yrs a carters labourer, Rosa 15 yrs a domestic servant, Wilfred 10 yrs a scholar and Leonard 1 year of age.

Military History

Private George William Taylor, served with the 20th (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, was killed in action on 5th June 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial,

Mansfield Reporter and Sutton Times published 13th July 1917 :- “News has reached Mrs. E. Taylor, 54, Portland street, Pleasley Hill, that her son, Pte. G. W. Taylor, Northumberland Fusiliers, Lewis Machine Gun Section, has been missing since June 5th. He is aged 22, and before joining the army worked at Messrs. Hollins, Pleasley Vale. He enlisted in March, 1916. This man is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council.
