Family History

Frederick Richard Knight was born in 1889 at Rotherham and was the only child of Frederick Knight a house painter and Louisa Knight née Davies of 15, Mount Street, New Basford, Nottingham. His father was born in 1868 at Southwell and his mother Louisa Davies was born in 1864 at Wellington, Shropshire, they were married in 1888 at Rotherham.In the 1911 census the family are living at 15 Mount Street, New Basford and are shown as Frederick 43 yrs a house painter, he is living with his son Frederick Richard 22 yrs a general labourer, also living with them is Walter Benjamin Knight 35 yrs a stationary engine stoker, he is the brother of Frederick (senior) His mother Louisa is not at the address on the night of the census she is a visitor at 28 Wycliffe Street, New Basford, she is shown as being 48 yrs and a monthly nurse, she is visiting Bertha Ann Williams 32 yrs a widow and her children. Frederick Richard Knight married his wife Mary Elizabeth Arlidge in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 14 Allen Street, Hucknall, they had a daughter Eva May born 22nd May 1916. Following his death his widow Mary was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week which commenced on 12th February 1917.

Military History

Private Frederick Richard Knight enlisted at Chesterfield and served with the 14th battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 19th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier & Faces 5A, 5B
