He was the son of George and Mary Ann Siddon. George and Mary, who were both born in Mansfield, had been married for 32 years in 1911 and had had eleven children of whom only three were still living at the time of the census. Their surviving children were Samuel, Thomas and William all of whom were born in Mansfield. Two daughters, Ann and Catherine, were named on the 1901 Census and were presumably two of the eight children who died in infancy or early childhood. In 1881 George and Mary were living at 9 Walkers Yard, Mansfield with their daughter, Ann (7 months). George was a general labourer and Mary a mill hand. By 1891 they were living at 29 Green Woods Yard, Mansfield, with their four children, Ann (10), Samuel (9), Thomas (2) and Catherine (2 months). The family has not been traced on the 1901 census but in 1911 George and Mary were still living at Greenwoods Yard, Mansfield, but only two of their sons were still living at home; Samuel (29) a boot riveter, and William (16) a coal miner. Their other surviving son, Thomas, had married Mary Ann Wood in 1910 and in 1911 they were living as boarders at 3 Belper Street, Newgate Lane, Mansfield, in the household of John, a colliery banksman, and Martha Jane Longmate. Thomas was a waggon lowerer at a colliery and Mary Ann was working as a cotton winder. They later lived at 10 Brickyard Row, Mansfield. In 1920, two years after Thomas' death, Mary married Arthur Spademan. Arthur died on 18 December 1927 aged 43 years.
