Jack Gladwin was born in 1899 at Mansfield and was the only surviving son of James Gladwin a coal miner hewer and Mary Jane Gladwin née Hampson of New Victoria Street Mansfield Nottinghamshire. His father James was born in 1871 at Edwinstow his mother Mary Jane Hampson was born in 1869 at Willenhall, Staffordshire, they were married in 1889 their marriage was registered in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have 4 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood, in the 1911 census the family are living at 29 Recreation Drive, Shirebrook and are shown as James Gladwin 40 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 42 yrs and their son Jack 12 yrs a scholar, James states they have been married for 22 yrs and have had 4 children, 3 of whom have died.
Private Jack Gladwin served as Jack Gladwin Green, he enlisted at Mansfield and initially served with the service number 84053 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 10th April 1918 whilst serving with the 8th battalion Border Regiment. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial
