Joseph Charles was born in 1891 (registered Apr/May/June), the son of William Harry [Harriman] and Betsy Ann Sweet nee Camm. William and Betsy completed the 1911 census with the information that they had been married for 22 years and had had ten children of whom nine were still living. Nine children were listed in the three census between 1891 and 1911: Mary E (1891 and 1901 only), Joseph Charles, William Harold, Frank Camm, Ernest E., Hilda E, Elizabeth, Harry and Florence Alice. In 1891 Joseph, his parents and older sister Mary were living at 3 Paradise Place, Basford. By 1901 the family of six children was living in Bulwell at 12 Gedling Street; there was also a boarder in the household, William Gunn (39). In 1911 William and Betsey and their eight youngest children were living at 15 Bastion Street, Radford. Joseph Charles married Violet (née Spencer) in 1914 (Apl/May/June); there is no record of any children of the marriage.
Private Joseph Sweet served with the 11th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He served with the BEF France from 25th August 1915 and died of wounds in No. 7 Casualty Clearing Station three weeks later on 19th September 1915. He is buried in Merville Communal Cemetery (grave ref: IV C 10).
