Charles Edward Sheppard was born in 1887 and was the son of Minnie Sheppard a lace hand. In the 1901 census he is living with his family at 7 Youngs Terrace, St Ann's, Nottingham, the family is shown as Minnie 37 yrs a widow and a lace hand, she is living with her children, Henry 15 yrs, Charles 14 yrs and Minnie 10 yrs. In the 1911 census Charles Edward is shown as being 24 yrs of age and he is a postman, he is shown as a visitor to 36 Moffatt Street, Nottingham, the home address of his future wife Florence Holford, and her family who are shown as :- Susan Holford, head of the family 63 years old a widow living on private means, she is living with three of her children , Elizabeth 28 yrs, a tailoress, Florence 22 yrs a pattern hand in a lace factory and Charles Sheppard 24 yrs a postman. He married his wife Florence Lavinia Holford in 1912 in Nottingham and they lived at 123 The Chase St Ann's Nottingham.
Private Charles Edward Sheppard, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards. He landed in France on 21st September 1914, he was killed in action 9th April 1916. He is buried in Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery.
In memoriam published 9th April 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SHEPPARD. – In loving remembrance of Charles Edward Sheppard, the ever true and faithful husband of Florence Sheppard, late of 123, The Chase, who fell in action April 9th, 1916, aged 29 years.
