Claude Victor Gregg was born in 1889 the son of Thomas a plumber and Sarah Ann Gregg (née Ball). His father was born in 1851 at Sutton in Ashfield and his mother in 1851 in Mansfield. They were married at Nottingham in 1871 and had the following children all born in Nottingham Thomas b.1873, Sarah Ann b.1878, Florence b.1880, Ruth b.1884, Harold Alexander b 1887, Claude Victor b.1889. Sarah Ann died in Nottingham on 1st June 1890 aged 39. Claude’s father married Eliza Ann Elliott (born in 1862 in Wednesborough Shropshire) in 1890 at Nottingham and in 1892 they had a son Reginald Arthur Gregg who worked with his father as a plumber. In 1911 they lived at 97 Arkwright Street Meadows Nottingham. Claude married Jessie Martin Anderson in 1907 in Nottingham. Following his death she remarried to become Jessie Hunt and went to live in Canada at 1724 27th Avenue Calgary West Canada.
Claude Victor Gregg enlisted on 15th June 1915 at Nottingham. He was promoted Lance Corporal 17th August 1915 and to Corporal on 17th September 1915. He landed in France on 6th March 1916 and was killed in action 24th May 1916. Le Touret Military Cemetery Richebourg-L'Avoue Grave Reference: III F 30
His step brother Private Reginald Arthur Gregg served with 11th Battalion Middlesex Regiment and was killed in action on 12th May 1917. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. In memoriam published 24th May 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GREGG. – In loving memory of Corporal C. V. Gregg, the beloved husband of Jessie Gregg, killed in action May 24th, 1916.
