Samuel Arthur Edge was born in 1899 in Radford and was the son of William a coal miner and Susannah Edge née Smith of 12 Wilton Street, Radford. His father William was born in 1874 Wednesbury Staffordshire , his mother Susannah Smith was born in 1880 in Kilamarsh, Derby they were married in 1894 in Nottingham, they went on to have the following children Hilda b1894 Radford, Harry b1896 Radford and Samuel b1899 Radford. In the 1901 census the family are living at 12 Wilton Street, Radford and are shown as William 27 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Susannah and their children Hilda 6 yrs, Harry 5 yrs and Samuel 2 yrs. In the 1911 census Samuel is living with his father William, they are boarding at Victoria Street, Somercotes, Derbyshire with Claude Barrowcliffe a coal miner and his wife Clara William is shown as being 36 yrs and a coal miner and his son Samuel is 13 yrs.
Private Samuel Arthur Edge, enlisted at Nottingham on 14th January 1916 he gave his age as 18 yrs and 19 days, his address as 15 Dorset Street, Radford and his occupation as a cycle hand, his next of kin was his sister Hilda of 126 Harcourt Road, Radford, he was posted to the reserves . He was moblised on 4th October 1916 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Folkstone on 17th May 1917 , disembarking the same day at Boulogne. He was posted on 10th June 1917 to serve with the 16th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Chatsworth Rifles) and joined them in the field on 19th June 1917. He was killed in action on 2nd August 1917. Initially reported wounded and missing, he is commemorated on the Menin Gate.
His father, Private William Edge, served with the 1/5th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he had been killed in action 14th May 1917. He is buried in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay. In memoriam published 14th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “EDGE. – In loving memory of my dear father, Private William Edge, killed in action May 14th, 1917. Time changes many things, loving memory ever clings. – From loving daughter Hilda and husband. “EDGE. – In loving memory of Private William Edge, killed in action May 14th, 1917. Death struck the blow, he in a moment fell, too far away to bid his friends farewell; just like a flower cot [?] in the bloom, and soon was hurried to his doom. He nobly answered duty's call, he gave his life for one and all; but the unknown grave is the bitterest blow, none but aching hears can know. – Loving mother, father, brothers, and sisters (Sam and Fred in France), and friend Ethel. “EDGE. – In loving memory of my dear brother, Private William Edge, killed in action May 14th, 1917.
