Family History

Charles Cyril Clayton was born in 1887 at Netherfield, Nottingham he was the son of the late George Clayton a railway porter and the late Sarah Jane Clayton née Coote his father George was born in 1857 at Fishtoft, Lincolnshire he died in 1889 aged 32 yrs, his mother Sarah Jane Coote was born in 1857at Boston, Lincolnshire, she died in 1914 at Loughborough aged 57 yrs. Charles Cyril Clayton married Emma Close on 28th September 1913 at West Leake, they did not have any children, they lived at 101 Wilford Road, Nottingham at the time of his marriage and of 3 Cathcart Hill Rookwood Road Nottingham. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 15shillings and 1 pence a week.

Military History

Corporal Charles Cyril Clayton enlisted on 10th December 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 29 yrs and 11 days, he was a valuer and lived at 101 Wilford Road, Nottingham. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war 9th January 1917 , he was posted to the Royal Engineerswhere he worked as a clerk, he appears to have had no overseas service, he was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1st January 1919 and was admitted to the Chatham Military Hospital with severe stomach pains, he died on 31st January 1919, the cause of death was given as Accute Pancreatitis he is buried at Nottingham General Cemetery.
