Albert Cavers

Albert (Bertie) F Rose was born in 1887 (registration period Jul/Aug/Sep) and was probably the son of Valentine and Mary Rose. However, the details on the census records for 1891 and 1901 suggest that Bertie (Albert) was adopted - either legally or informally - by Edward and Sarah Cavers some time between those dates and took the surname 'Cavers'. In 1891 Edward and Sarah were living at 9 Church Terrace, Nottingham, with their son, Harry (6), and 'Bertie F Rose', who was described as a boarder. (Also in the household were two visitors Kate E Green and her daughter, Sarah.) By 1901 the Cavers family was living at 14 Victoria Avenue, Sneinton Dale. Harry and Bertie, who was now described as Edward and Sarah's son, were both apprentices. Edward's father, Walter Cavers (70), a widower, was also living with the family. In 1911 Edward and Sarah were living at 14 Pierrepont Road, West Bridgford, with their granddaughter, Winifred (3), their son, Harry (26) and daughter-in-law Lily (25). Harry and Lily had been married for four years. Edward completed the census that he and Sarah had had one child born alive and that this child [Harry] was still living. Albert (Bert) was not living with the Cavers at the time of the 1911 census but was a boarder at 35 St Anns Hill Road, Nottingham, in the home of Mary Rose (65, b. Harby Leicestershire), who was probably his birth mother. Mary's daughter, Elsie Annie (17) and an 11 month old child, Charles Foster Bare, were also in the house; Mary was described as Charles' child nurse. The 1911 census records that Mary had been married for 42 years, although it is probable that she was a widow by this date; she had had 14 children born alive of whom 9 were still living and 5 had died. Census records for the period 1861-1901 show that Mary and her husband, Valentine, moved frequently during their married life. The 1871 census records Valentine and Rose living at Thorpe End, Melton Mowbray; Valentine was a cordwainer. They had three daughters: Martha Rose (7, b. Melton Mowbray), Sarah A Rose (5, b. Melton Mowbray) and Lily Rose (1, b. Melton Mowbray). By 1881 they were living in Cropwell Bishop, where Valentine was a boot and shoe maker, with their five children: Lily Rose (11), Joseph V Rose (9), Julia Rose (6, b. Harby, Leics), Annie Rose (2) and Lizzie Rose (3m, b. Cropwell Bishop). A school-age niece, Adeliza Squires was also living with them. Ten years later in 1891 Mary and Valentine were living at 171 Arkwright Street, Meadows, with six of their children: Lily Rose (21, Melton, Leics), Joseph Rose (19, Cropwell Butler), Lizzy Rose (10, Nottingham), Florrie Rose (8), Gertrude Rose (6), Walter Rose (2). By 1901 Mary (55) was living at 5 Bleasby Street, Sneinton, and listed as the head of the household. Living with her were five children: Julia Rose (26, b. Harby Leics), Lizzie Rose (20, b. Cropwell Bishop), Gertrude Rose (15, b. Nottingham), Walter Rose (12, b. Nottingham) and Elsie A Rose (7, b. Nottingham). She also had a lodger, Isabella Thompson (80, living on own means).
