He was the son of Charles Middleton and Mary Ellen (Nellie) Brown and the brother of Evelyn (later Mitchell), Roland, Florrie, Ellen, Thomas and Jessie Brown. In 1911 they lived at 24 Belle View Road, Nottingham. He married Clara Davis 19/10/1916. Clara married Arthur Matthews at Nottingham during the summer of 1918 and they lived at 11 Firsby Terrace, Pym Street, St Ann's Nottingham (ASR and 1911 Census).
Previously 10th Bn. K.R. Rif C. R/15721. Pte., 20th Bn. K.R. Rif C. R/15721 (Medal Roll). He attested 4/10/1915 declaring his age to be 25 years 11 months. This was incorrect as he was born O/N/D/1887. He was posted to France 3/2/1916 incurring a finger wound 3/8/1917 rejoining his unit 31/8/1917. In 1919 Clara was granted a weekly pension of 13/9d. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial: Panel 115 to 119 and 162A and 163A.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 12 October 1917: ‘Brown. Killed in action September 20th, Rifleman Charles Brown, King’s Royal Rifles, husband of Clara Brown, in his 30th year. Wife. Eldest son of Mr and Mrs Brown of Leicester Street.’ There is a record in a Nottingham St Mary's parish register which was compiled during the war, of a Charles Brown living with a family called 'Wilkinson': (1914) 31 Leicester Street.
