His father Joseph was born in 1865 at Whitwick, Leicestershire and his mother Rose Hannah Swain was born in 1863 at Belper. They were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 9 children sadly 1 died in infancy their surviving children all born in Hucknall were , Walter Henry b1884, John b1885, Daniel b1888, Emily b1890, Joseph b1892, James b1894, Rose b1900 and Fred b1905. In the 1911 census the family are living at 19 Victoria Street, Hucknall and are shown as Joseph 46 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Rose Hannah 48 yrs and their children, James 17 yrs a farm labourer, Roe 10 yrs a scholar and Fred 6 yrs Joseph married his wife Madge Hayes in 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 86 George Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire, they went on to have a son Joseph W Harley born in 1911. In the 1911 census he and his wife are living at 29 Florence Street, Hucknall and are shown as Joseph 19 yrs a pit mechanic, he is living with his wife Madge 19 yrs.

Private Joseph Harley enlisted at Doncaster and served with the 9th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infnatry. He was killed in action on 23rd October 1918 and is buried in Amerval Communal Cemetery Extension, France, grave reference C.11
