Ernest Brierley was born on 19th May 1867 at Clay Cross, he was baptised on 15th January 1868 at Clay Cross, he was the son of the late William a furnace labourer and the late Mary Brierley née Smith of Market Street, Clay Cross, Chesterfield. His father William was born in 1840 at Ashover, he died in 1903 aged 63 yrs, his mother Mary Smith was born in 1843 at Codnor Park she died in 1901 aged 58 yrs, they were married on 7th October 1861 at Chesterfield, they had 7 children. Ernest married Elizabeth Ann Holland Dawes born 1868 Wessington, Derbyshire in 1891 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire, they had 8 children. In the 1911 census his wife is living at 19 West Gate, Old Basford, Nottingham, is is shown as Elizabeth Ann 43 yrs a blouse machinist, she is living with her children, Sarah 17 yrs a domestic help, Gladys 15 yrs, Willam George 12 yrs, Marjorie 10 yrs, John 7 yrs and Ernest 5 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Ernest Brierley served as William SMITH he enlisted at West Staveley and served with the 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers, he landed in France on 3rd May 1915, he was killed in action on 2nd October 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
