Albert Ernest Wootton was born in 1884 in Radford, Nottingham, he was the son of Albert Wootton a hosiery machinist and Maria Jane Wootton née Shipstone. His father was born in 1858 in Radford and his mother Maria Jane Shipstone was born in 1857 in Nottingham they were married in 1877 in Nottingham, and went on to have 5 children , Alice b1879 Radford, Albert E b1884 Radford, Frederick b1887 Woolwich, Clara b1890 Woolwich, Harold b1893 Nottingham and May b1895 Nottingham. His mother died in 1895 in Nottingham aged 38 yrs. In the 1901 census the family are living at 4 Eleanor Terrace , Nottingham, they are shown as Albert b1858 a widower, he is living with his 5 children Albert E b1884, Frederick b1887, Clara b1890, Harold b1893 and May b1895. He was married to his wife Selina Cox (b1885 Nottm) in Nottingham in 1910 they lived at 131 Colwick Vale, Colwick, Nottingham (CWGC). In the 1911 census Albert is a lodger living at 82 Norland Road, Nottingham , he is shown as being 27 yrs head of his family a leather dresser he is living with his wife Selina 26 yrs a lace finisher also living with them is Dorothy May Wootton 16yrs also a lace finisher, the family are living with John Cox 66 yrs a widower and brick maker . At the time of her husband's death his address was given as 17 Dame Agnes Street, Nottingham.
Lance Corporal Albert Ernest Wootton enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 2nd battalion South Staffordshire Regiment . He died of wounds at Etretat, France on 22nd February 1917 and is is buried in Etretat Churchyard extension (grave ref. l.C.6).
Nottingham Post notice (abridged) 21 March 1917: ‘Lance Corporal AE Wootton South Staffordshire, 17 Dame Agnes Street, Nottingham, died of wounds February 22nd aged 32 (sic).’ Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 22nd February 1918 read:- “WOOTTON. - In loving remembrance of my dear husband, Lance-Corporal Ernest Wootton, who died in France, February 22nd, 1917. Sweet is the memory of one we loved so dear. - From his sorrowing wife and child. “WOOTTON. - In loving memory of our dear brother, Lance-Cpl. Ernest Wootton, South Staffords, died of wounds February 22nd, 1917. Never forgotten. - Sisters Alice and May, brother-in-law Ernest in France. “WOOTTON. - In loving memory of our dear brother, Lance-Cpl. Ernest Wootton, South Staffords, died of wounds February 22nd, 1917. The supreme sacrifice. - Sisters Clara, Nellie, Alice and George. “WOOTTON. - In loving memory of our dear uncle, Ernest Wootton, who died of wounds February, 22ns, 1917. - From his loving nephew, Willie (R.F.C.), and nieces, May and Lily Rose. Duty nobly done. “WOOTTON. - In memory of Corpl. Ernest Wootton, died of wounds received in action February 22nd, 1917.
