John George Tongue was born in 1896 in Ruddington and was the son of Robert a road man for the district council and Mary Tongue née Wright of Olives Row, High Street, Ruddington. Robert was born in 1858 in Ruddington, Mary Wright 1863 at Sutton in Ashfield. Married in 1884, they had nine chidren, four surviving infancy - Eveline b1895 Calverton, John George b1896 Ruddington, Mary Elizabeth b1899 Ruddington and Jesse Arthur b1905 Ruddington. In 1911 they lived at Olive’s Row, Ruddington. Eveline was a winder and John George a telegraph messenger.
John George Tongue enlisted at Nottingham and initially served (21445) in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry later transferring to the Lancashire Fusiliers. He first entered a theatre of war on 24th November 1915 (MIC) and he died of wounds on 29th March 1918. He was buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium Grave Reference: VI.B.24
His father, Robert Tongue, had died on 29th January 1918. He was one of the garrison of Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War and is buried in Ruddington Cemetery
