Family History

Caleb John Hardy was born in 1893 at Blakenhall, Staffordshire and was the son of Caleb John a coal miner and Emma Hardy née Watson of 43 Spring Street, Hucknall. His father Caleb John was born in 1869 at Brockmoor, Staffordshire and his mother Emma Watson was born in 1872 at Bloxwich, Staffordshire, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Walsall Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Caleb John b1893 Blakenhall, Alice b1895 Blakenhall, Emma b1897 Blakenhall, William Henry b1901 Blakenhall, Thomas b1906 Hucknall, Eliza b1907 Hucknall and Harry Hardy b1910 Hucknall In the 1911 census the family were living at 43 Spring Street Hucknall Torkard and were shown as Caleb John Hardy 42 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Emma 39 yrs and their children, Caleb John 17 yrs a colliery labourer, Alice 16 yrs a house invalid, Emma 14 yrs a cigar leaf dipper, William Henry 10 yrs a scholar, Thomas 5 yrs a scholar, Eliza 4 yrs and Harry 1 year of age.

Military History

Private Caleb John Hardy, enlisted at Hucknall on 20th July 1915, he gave his age as 22 yrs and 66 days and his occupation as that of a collier, his address was 43 Spring Street, Hucknall and his next of kin was his father Caleb John of the same address. He arrived on 24th July 1915 at the depot at Wrexham and was posted to the 3rd battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was serving with the 9th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers, when he was killed in action on 3rd July 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
