Family History

William Waplington was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of Walter a dairy manager and Charlotte Eliza Waplington née Wedgewood of 2 Robin Hood Chase, St Ann’s, Nottingham. His father Walter was born in 1871 at Hyson Grren, his mother Charlotte Eliza Wedgewood was born in 1870 at Newington, London, they were married in 1889 at Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Park Street, Nottingham, Walter 39 yrs is a dairy manager, he is living with his children, May 16 yrs a cashier, William 14 yrs a dairy errand boy, Emma 12 yrs, Hilda 11 yrs, Fred 9 yrs, Lottie 7 yrs and Kitty 4 yrs of age.

Military History

L. Sgt. Waplington enlisted in Nottingham,he served with the 14th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he landed in France on 9th September 1915, he was reported missing on 21st March 1918 on the first day of the German offensive, Operation Michael. He was reported missing and his death was not confirmed until June 1919 (Evening Post, June 12, 1919). His name was commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial (Panel 16-18)
