Family History

George Wakefield was born in 1890 at Nottingham, he was the son of Phoebe Wakefield, his mother Phoebe was born in 1868 at Nottingham he had brother James born 1885. His mother married Damiel Maltby an engineers labourer on 6th March 1900 in Nottingham, they had 3 children, in the 1911 census the family are living at 26 Cairns Street, Nottingham. Daniel Maltby is 43 yrs he is living with his wife Phoebe 43 yrs and his children Doris 10 yrs Leslie 8 yrs and Clarice 7 yrs. In the same 1911 census George is in the Army, he is 22 yrs of age and a lance corporal wit the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, in barracks at Hong Kong.

Military History

Sergeant George Wakefield enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light infantry, he died of gun shot wounds and double pneumonia on 24th March 1915, he is buried at Ramparts Cemetry, Lille Gate, Ypres, Belgium.
