He was born about 1894, the son of Noah and Elizabeth Gething. In the 1911 census Noah and Elizabeth were recorded as having been married for 34 years and having had 10 children of whom nine were still living although 11 children were named over a period of four census returns, 1881-1911. Both Noah and Elizabeth had been born in Staffordshire but by 1881 they were living on Beardall Street, Hucknall Torkard, with their two children Elizabeth (3) and Joseph (1). Ten years later they had moved house (address illegible on the census form) but were still living in Hucknall. There were six children in the household at the time of the 1891 census; Elizabeth, Joseph, Edith Alice (9), Lois B. (7), Christiana (5) and Ammabella Mary (1). They moved again for in 1901 the family was living at 30 Wood Lane, Hucknall, and there were now seven children in the house; Charles (21), Lois, Frank (13), Ammabella, Ellen (9), Hiram (7) and William Noah (5). By 1911 Noah and Elizabeth were living at 21 Beech Avenue, Hucknall Torkard, and there were just four children in the household; Ammabella, Ellen, Hiram and William. Hiram's father died in 1913 aged 59, one of his sisters, Edith, died in 1924 aged 43, while his mother died on 14 March 1932 aged 77.
Shoeing Smith Hiram Gething, enlisted at Hucknall, he served with the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers). He landed in France on 18th May 1915 and was killed in action on 1st April 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial (Panel 2).
Soldiers' Effects: His mother, Elizabeth, was his legatee. Inscription on family headstone, Hucknall Cemetery: 'Also in memory of Hiram Gething killed in France April 1st 1918 in his 24th year. Also in memory of Edith Alice Gething died at Ipswich Nov (-) 1924 aged 43 years. Also Elizabeth Gething dearly loved wife of Noah Gething died March 14th 1932 aged 77 years. Reunited.'
