Family History

Ernest Stoneystreet was born in 1894 in Nottingham and was the son of James (Jim) a hawker and Lilly Stoneystreet née Matthews of 50 Dickenson Street, Nottingham. His father was born in 1863 in Nottingham and his mother Lily Matthews was born in 1874 in Nottingham. They were married in 1893 in Nottingham. Lily brought a child to their marriage Harry Matthews b1892 in Nottingham, and she and her husband had one child, a daughter Lily b1898 Nottingham. Ernest's father Jim died in 1900 Nottingham; he was 36 yrs. Ernest married his wife Sylvia Elizabeth Wilcockson on 5th November 1915 at St James Church, Nottingham. They went on to live at 5 St Cutherberts Road, Carlton Road, Nottingham. Following Ernest's death his widow lived at 162 St Ann’s Well Road.

Military History

Formerly 40705 Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) Private Ernest Stoneystreet enlisted on 10th December 1915 at Nottingham giving his age as 22 yrs 73 days and his address as 27 Hutton Road, Nottingham. His next of kin was his wife Sylvia Elizabeth Stoneystreet and his occupation was that of a hosiery mechanic. He was placed into the reserves on 11 December, the day after he had enlisted. He was mobilised on 2nd June 1916 and posted to the 3rd battalion Sherwood Foresters. He embarked for France on 14th November 1916 and transferred to the North Staffordshire Regiment on 2nd December 1916. He was wounded in action with a shell wound to his thigh and was admitted to the 2nd Casualty Clearing Station on 27th March 1917. He died there the following day. He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France (grave reference III. B. 34).

Personal inscription on CWGC headstone: 'To Higher Service' In memoriam published 28th March 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “STONEYSTREET. – In loving memory of Pte. E. Stoneystreet, late 50, Dickinson-street, died of wounds March 28th, 1917.
