Frederick Herne Porter

Frederick Herne the son of Sam [Samuel] Deacon Porter and Pamela Porter nee Bacon. His father Sam Deacon was born in Plungar, Leicestershire, the son of Edward and Hannah Porter who in 1881 were living in St Ann's, Nottingham. His mother Pamela was born in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, in 1866 (A/M/J Belper). They were married in 1886 (A/M/J Nottingham) and had seven children of whom only four were still living in 1911. Five children were recorded on the census between 1891 and 1911: Alfred Deacon birth registered 1889 (J/F/M Nottingham), Samuel Harold (also known as Harold) birth registered 1891 (J/F/M Nottingham), Edith Mary b. 1892 (O/N/D Nottingham), George Edward b. 1895 (A/M/J Nottingham) who died aged 9 in 1904 (J/A/S Nottingham) and Frederick Herne b. 1898 (J/A/S Nottingham). All the children were born in Nottingham; Samuel Harold in the ecclesiastical parish of St Saviour's Nottingham. In 1891 Sam (23), a postman, and Pamela (25) were living at 12 Meadow Grove, Sneinton, with their two sons Alfred (2) and Samuel (2 months). By 1901 the family had moved to 20 Dane Street, Nottingham. Sam (33) was still working as a postman for the GPO. He and Pamela (35) now had five children: Alfred (12), Samuel (10), Edith (8), George (5) and Frederick (2). George died three years later in 1904 at the age of nine. In 1911 Sam (43), now a head postman, and Pamela (45) were living at 4 Newdigate Villas, Newdigate Street, Nottingham. Only three of their four surviving children were in the home on the night of the census: Alfred (22) who was unemployed, Edith (18) a dressmaker and Frederick (12) who was still at school. Their second son, Samuel Harold, has not yet been positively identified on the 1911 Census although a Harold Porter (20) was living at 44 Laurie Avenue, Forest Fields, in the home of his uncle Harry Porter, and his wife Sarah. However, a Harold Porter (21) born in the parish of St Saviour's Nottingham, was recorded on the Military Census (China and Hong Kong) serving with the 1st Bn, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Samuel served in the 4th Bn KOYLI in the war (9383 Private) and was killed in action on 8 May 1915 (Ypres Menin Gate Memorial). His military records give his first name as 'Harold'. The eldest brother, Alfred, married Elizabeth E Wilford in 1914 (O/N/D Nottingham). No record has yet been found that he served in the war. He died in 1941 (March Nottingham) aged 52. Frederick's mother Pamela died in October 1918 (Dec Nottingham) aged 52 (Nottingham General Cemetery). At the time of her death the family home was at 32 Laurie Street, Forest Fields although the later CWGC records give an address of 53 Russell Road, Forest Fields. Frederick's father Sam Deacon married Ada Kate Aldan (b. 7 December 1870) in 1921 (O/N/D Nottingham). Sam died on 10 September 1937; he was still living at 53 Russell Road, Forest Fields. His widow was still at the same address in 1939 and living there with Ena Aldan, later Tulley, (b. 24 January 1896), who was probably her daughter. Ada died in 1944 (December Nottingham).
