Family History

Sylvester Dunn was born in 1893 in Hucknall and was the son of John a coal miner and Mary Ann Dunn née Robinson of 14 Lingford Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire. His father John was born in 1864 in Cropton, Yorkshire and his mother Mary Ann Robinson was born in 1866 in Hucknall , they were married in 1887 in Ilkeston , they had a child prior to their marriage, John William Dunn Robinson b1886 in Hucknall , following the marriage they had the following children all of whom were born in Hucknall Maud b1889, Rebecca b1891, Sylvester b1893, Alice Gertrude b1895 , Winifred b1898, James Vincent b1904 and Stephen Everard Dunn b1907. In the 1911 census the family are shown living at 14 Lingford Street, Hucknall and are shown as John 47 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Mary 45 yrs and their children , John William 25 yrs a coal miner, Maud 22 yrs a comb hand in the lace industry, Rebecca 20 yrs a comb hand in the lace industry, Sylvester 18 yrs a pony driver underground in a colliery, Alice Gertrude 16 yrs no occupation, Winifred 13 yrs a scholar, James Vincent 6 yrs and Stephen Evered 4 yrs.

Military History

Rifleman Sylvester Dunn enlisted in Hucknall and served with the 11th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He landed in France as a reinforcement to 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps on 15th April 1915. He was killed in action on 30th November 1917, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louveral.
