He was the youngest son of Stephen and Sarah Marshall who at the time of his death were living at 19A Woodborough Road, Nottingham. In 1891 Stephen and Sarah were living at 11 Wellington Street, Nottingham, in the parish of St Andrew. There were four children recorded in the household; Herbert (13), Henry (11), Frances (9) and Albert (6).
He joined the Royal Navy on 2 March 1900 and joined HMS Ganges for training. He was still serving in Ganges, age 16, at the time of the 1901 census. On 28 August 1902 he engaged for 12 years and continued to serve during the First World War. In 1910 while serving in HMS Juno (10 August 1909-10 January 1911) he deserted but was detained and returned to Juno before being drafted to HMS Revenge (11 January 1911-28 December 1911). According to the Register of Seamen's Services, Albert's last ship was HMS Marlborough (to 26 November 1916), but this is not borne out by his death while serving in HMS Landrail when he accidentally drowned while returning from leave on 1 January 1919. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery (grave ref. 05414).
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 4 January 1919: 'Marshall. On January 1st, Albert, youngest son of Stephen and Sarah Marshall of 19A Woodborough Road and of the HMS Landrail, accidentally drowned while returning from leave, after 19 years service, aged 34 years. Mother, father, brothers, sister.'
