Family History

Ernest Albert Cowley was born in 1879 at Middlesborough and was the son of the late Albert a dairyman and Mary Cowley née Thomas of 53 Montague Road, Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire His father Albert was born in 1845 at Kingstanley in Glocestershire and his mother Mary Jane Thomas was born in 1846 at Spaxton, Somerset, they were married on 28th August 1876 at St Lukes Church, Bedminster, Somerset, they went on to have the following children, Ernest b1879 Middlesborough, Gertrude b1882 Middlesborough and James b1887 Hucknall. Ernest Albert married his wife Elizabeth Hewitt (born 26th July 1881 on 2nd November 1902 at St Thomas Church, North Kensington, London, they had the folowing children, Kathleen born 17th September 1903, Albert James born 17th July 1905 and Gertude Mary born 14th Februaury 1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at 27 Woodward Street, Trent Bridge Nottingham and are shown as Ernest Albert Cowley 32 yrs a dairyman, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 29 yrs and their children, Netty 7 yrs Jimmy 5 yrs and Gertrude 54 yrs of age. The family later lived at 208 Fitzwilliam Street Sheffield. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 9th April 1917.

Military History

Rifleman Ernest Cowley enlisted at Sheffield and served with the 12th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was killed in action on 19th September 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
