Charles Couzens

Private Charles Couzens, served with the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was “shot through the head by a sniper” on 1st August 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

An article from the Hucknall Dispatch dated 31st August 1916 :- “He was killed in action on August 1st, and leaves a wife and three children, aged respectively five years, three years, and one year and eight months who are residing at 18, Whyburn street, Hucknall. The deceased soldier was 35 years of age, and worked as a farm labourer for Mr. Lamin, of Bestwood,, and Mr. Swift, of Linby. He next entered service of Mr. W. Gilliver, removal contractor, of Hucknall, and was only with him a fortnight when he decided to forsake civilian life, and don the khaki. As a matter of fact he enlisted as the result of the appeal of Corporal Upton V.C., on Hucknall Market place.
