The following details are taken from the record of his brother, Private George Holloway, Sherwood Foresters, who was killed in action on 20 September 1917. Fred was born in 1888, the son of John F. and Fanny Holloway. His father was born in Oxton, Nottinghamshire, in 1847 and worked as a pavement layer. His mother, Fanny Holloway, was born in Nottingham in 1854. He had two brothers, Robert F. (b. 1878), who also worked as a pavement layer, and George, a shop assistant, as well as two sisters, Annie (b. 1875), a lace clipper, and Mabel F. (b. 1884) who was an apron machinist. The family lived at 25 Campbell Street, Nottingham (1911 census).
He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 12 October 1917: 'Holloway. Killed in action September 20th, Lance Corporal (sic) G Holloway, Sherwood Foresters, of 25 Campbell Grove, age 32. Second son to fall. Father, mother, sisters, brother.'
