He was the son of Alfred and Helen Fox of 69 Derby Road Nottingham. George's father and sister, Doris, were living at this address when George was killed. His mother predeceased him. In 1911 the family was boarding at 152 Dame Agnes Street, St Ann's, Nottingham.

Military History

'C' Coy. He was reported missing after the first day of the Battle of the Somme but his death was not confirmed until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial.

Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 15 June 1917: 'Fox. Missing July 1st now reported killed, Private George Ernest Fox, Sherwood Foresters, age 21 (sic), only son of Alfred and the late Helen Fox, 69 Derby Road. Mother, father, sister Doris.'
