He was the son of Philip and Lizza Hanford and the brother of Philip, Nellie, Arthur, Milly, Tom, Rose, Lucy and Mary Hanford. They lived at 282 Carlton Road in 1911 and later at 16 Needham's Avenue Thorneywood Lane (both Nottingham).
