Enlisted with his brother (my grandfather) 17964 Philip James D’Hooghe in the Hussars in August 1914. My grandfather was wounded with the loss of an eye in September 1915 and he lived until 1979. My great grandmother, Kate, refused to believe that her son was dead as his body was never identified. I attach a photo of Jack and a photo of his mother’s headstone as even after her death in 1954, she still would not accept he was dead. My grandfather did not die in the war but did spend time with his eye wound at the Nottingham Eye Infirmary.’ (See photos) origin Johnathan D'Hooghe
