Family History

Claue Alfred was born in 1885 in Nottingham and was the son of Robert Cryer a tailor and Helena Cryer née Saunders. His father Robert was born in 1856 in Hunslett Yorkshire and his mother Helena Saunders was born in 1856 at Newmarket , Suffolk , they were married in 1880 in Nottingham and went on to have 2 further children, Harry b1879 and Ernest b1882 both born in Nottingham. His father Robert died in 1899 in Nottingham he was 45 yrs old. Claude married his wife Clara Dunn in Nottingham in 1905 and they had children, Robert, Nellie and Clarice Cryer. In 1911 they lived at 24 Herbert Street Nottingham, but later moved to 21 Ashover Terrace, Manning Street, Nottingham In the 1911 census his mother Helena is 56 yrs a widow a tailoress living at 72 Trueman Street, Nottingham, she is living at the address with a Annie Sommerland 34 yrs also a widow and a tailoress.

Military History

Rifleman Claude Alfred Cryer, enlisted in Nottingham , he formerly served with service number C/7511 in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, later transferring to the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade, he was killed in action on 29th March 1918 and is buried in Point-du-Jour Military Cemetery, Athies.
