Gustavus Adolphus Lenglet

Gustavus Adolphus was born in 1880 (Jul/Aug/Sep), the son of Alfred Gustave (Gustave) Lenglet and Jemima Eugenie (Eugenie) Lenglet (nee Hulbert). His mother was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Hulbert. She was born in London in 1856 and baptised at St Leonard, Shoreditch, on 2 November 1856. His father was born in France in about 1852. Gustave and Eugenie were married in 1879 (Jan/Feb/Mar) in Derby registration district. They were to have at least five children, Maud Bertha (b. 1879), Gustavus Adolphus (b. 1880), Gertrude, Henry Alfred, known as Alfred (b. 1883) and Ada Pauline (b. 1884). No birth registration details have been found for Alfred or Gertrude but both children were named on the 1891 census. Alfred has been identified on other records but no further records have been found for Gertrude. There is also a record of an Alfred Lenglet whose birth was registered in Nottingham in the first quarter of 1877 and who died in 1877 (death registered Oct/Nov/Dec) and it is possible he was the son of Gustavus and Eugenie born before their marriage. In 1881 Gustave, a wholesale druggist, and Eugenie were living at 27 Newthorpe Street, Nottingham, with their two children, Maud Bertha (1) and Gustavus Adolphus (1 month). By 1891 Eugenie had been widowed and was living at 28 Moorgate Street, Radford. Three of her children were at home the night of the census: Maud (11), Gertrude (10) and Alfred (8); there may be a discrepancy in their ages as recorded on the census. Gustavus' whereabouts have not yet been traced on the night of the 1891 census but in 1901 Eugenie and four children, Maud, Gustavus, Alfred and Ada (16), were living at 12A Denison Street, Radford. Eugenie was still at the same address in 1911 and was now working as a clipper for a lace manufacturer. Her two oldest children, Maud (31, a runner-on for a hosiery manufacturer) and Gustavus, were still living with her. Her second son, Alfred, was married and living with his wife and daughter at 157 Birkin Avenue, Nottingham. Gustavus married Eliza Ann Shipstone (b. Nottingham abt 1883) in 1912 (Jul/Aug/Sep) and they had a daughter, Doris Pauline, who was born on 21 April 1914. At the time of Gustavus' death in 1916 the family was living at 28 Sketchley Street, Nottingham. His widow never remarried and died age 50 on 10 February 1933; she was living at 44 Daybrook Street, Sherwood. His daughter Doris married in 1935 (Ashton) and died in 1979 aged 65 (death registered in Leicester). His mother died in Nottingham in 1914 (registered Oct/Nov/Dec). Gustavus' brother, 511847 Private Henry Alfred Lenglet, Labour Corps (formerly Leicestershire Regiment) also served in the Great War and died in France of pneumonia on 25 October 1918; he is buried in Etretat Churchyard Extention. He left a wife, Emma, and two daughter, Edith Eugenia and Cissie. His sister, Maud Bertha, was married in 1916 (Bullens) and died in 1947 aged 67. There is a record of Ada's marriage in Nottingham in 1913 to Herbert Smith, the birth of sons in 1916 and 1920 and her death in Nottingham in 1968. No additional information has been found about Gertrude.
