William Burton was born in 1898 in Hucknall and was the son of William a coal miner and Harriett Burton née Hutchinson of 16 Montague Road, Hucknall, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1869 in Hucknall and hs mother Harrriett Hutchinson was born in 1873 also in Hucknall. They were married in 1890, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 10 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Hucknall and were Clara b1894, Elizabeth b1896, William b1898, Doris b1902, Susannah b1904, Frank b1907and Catherine Burton b1908. In the 1911 census the family are shown living at 14 Montague Road Hucknall and are shown as William 42 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Harriett 38 yrs and their children Clara 17 yrs a lace mender, Elizabeth 15 yrs a curtain ticketer, William 13 yrs a scholar, Doris 9 yrs a scholar, Susannah 7 yrs a scholar, Frank 4 yrs and Catherine 3 yrs.
Lance Corporal William Burton, enlisted at Hucknall and initially served with service number 17365 in the Royal Fusiliers , he later transferred and served with the 1st Battalion Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, he died from sunstroke on 14th June 1916. He is buried in Amara War Cemetery.
