Henry was the eldest child of John and Susan Boyd. In 1891 they were living at 52 Brook Street, Nottingham. His father was a printer and his mother a lace dresser. By 1901 John and Susan were living with their two sons, Henry (11) and John (1), at 27 Byron Street, Sneinton. John was by then an umbrella maker working from home while Susan was still employed as a lace dresser. At the time of the next census (1911) they were living at 17 Pierrepont Street. John and Susan had been married for 23 years and had had five children born alive of whom only three were living. The local obituary notice cites a sister, Frances, but she was not in the family home on the nights of the 1901 and 1911 census. John and Susan later lived at 7 Selborne Street Pym Street Nottingham.
Private Henry Boyd, served with “C” Company, 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Welbeck Rangers). He died of illness in a Leicester hospital on 22nd March 1917. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.(ref 944). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 19 April 1917: Boyd. Died of sickness, Private Henry Boyd, son of John and Susan Boyd, age 27. Father, mother, sister Frances and brother Jack [John]. His brother Jack also served in France. (P.F.)
