Family History

Thomas Burke (junior) was born in 1889 at Leigh in Lancashire, he was the son of the late Thomas Burke (senior) and Ellen Burke of Hucknall. In the 1911 census Thomas Burke (junior) had enlisted into the Army and was with his battalion in Barracks in India.

Military History

Private Thomas Burke enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and served in India. He went to France on 10th September 1914 and was killed in action on 20th October 1914, when the battalion held position south-east of Bois Grenier, Ennetieres/Escobecques, France against a German attack. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the : Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium. Panel 7.
