Joseph was born in 1896 in Newark and was the son of Eva and the late John Binch. He lived with his family at Hagg Nook Cottages, Newstead, moving to 12 Hazel Grove, Hucknall, after the death of his father in 1916. He was still living at 12 Hazel Grove when he enlisted.
Spr. Joseph Binch enlisted on 12th September 1917 and served with the Inland Waterways Department, Royal Engineers, with service number 332635, later renumbered WR/508201. A bargeman, he served in France with the IWD from 6th October 1917. He survived the war and transferred to Class Z Army Reserve on 1st April 1920. Joseph died on 6th January 1922; his death was attributed to being gassed in the war. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Newstead Old Cemetery.
Joseph Binch does not appear on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website as the Commission's cut-off date for deaths attributable to war service is 31 August 1921. For the same reason he is not recorded on the UK Soldiers Who Died in the Great War. However, his name was included on the list of casualties compiled for Hucknall's war memorial which was unveiled on 3 September 1922. All details from Jim Grundy; Joseph Grundy was his maternal grandfather's oldest brother.
