Family History

William Barrow was born in 1898 at Hucknall and he was the son of John Thomas a collier and Maria Barrow, née Robinson of 89 Watnall Road Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire. His father was born in 1856 at Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire and died 16th December 1931 aged 75 yrs and his mother Maria Robinson was born in 1861 in Kimberley and died on 9th March 1943 aged 79 yrs. They were married in 1882, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District. They went on to have 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Hucknall and were, Mary b1884, Thomas b1886, Minnie b1887, Ada b1889, Sidney b1891, John Robert b1896, William b1898 and Gladys May b1907. In the 1911 census the family are living at 89 Watnall Road, Hucknall and are shown as John Thomas 55 yrs a coal cutter he is living with his wife Maria 50 yrs and their children Thomas 25 yrs a coal miner, Minnie 24 yrs domestic, Sidney 20 yrs a coal miner, John Robert 15 yrs a wagon repairer, William 13 yrs an errand lad and Glady May 4 yrs.

Military History

Rifleman William Barrow enlisted at Nottingham and initially served with the service number 49732 in the Leicestershire Regiment, he was serving with the 34th battalion (County of London) London Regiment when he died of wounds on 29th October 1918. He is buried in Don Communal Cemetery, Annoeullin, Nord,France grave reference I.A.38
