Family History

William Harrison was born 1883 at Tibshelf he was baptised on 17th November 1886 at Tibshelf, Derbyshire, he was the son of Joseph a coal miner and the late Mary Harrison née Wass of 10 New England, Mansfield Road, Pleasley Hill. His father Joseph was born in 1859 at Somercotes, his mother Mary Wass born in 1863 at Tibshelf, she died in 1909 at Mansfield aged 46 yrs, they were married on 29th May 1882 at Tibshelf, they went on to have 12 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 New England, Mansfield Road, Pleasley Hill, his father Joseph 52 yrs a widow and a coal miner, he is living with 8 of his children, William is not at the family home at the time of this census.

Military History

Private William Harrison enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Pleasley Hill, he initially served with the service number 16218 in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, he was serving with the Machine Gun Corps when he was killed in action on 18th November 1916. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
