Ezra Bagnall (junior)was born in Hucknall in 1888 and was the son of Ezra Bagnall (senior) a coal miner and Betsey Bagnall née Staley of 2 Spring Street, Hucknall. Ezra Bagnall (senior) was born in 1864 Betsey Stacey was born in 1871 both were born at Hucknall, they were married on 6th October 1884 at Basford register office. they went on to have 11 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. Ezra (junior) married his wife Mary Ann Berridge in 1909 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 2 children, Gladys born 1911 and William Henry born 1912. In 1911 his parents and siblings were living at 2 Spring Street, Hucknall, Ezra 47 yrs a coal miner hewer is living with his wife Betsey 40 yrs and 7 of their children. In the 1911 census we find Ezra junior living at 80 Byron Street Hucknall with his wife Mary Ann and his new born baby daughter (3 weeks of age) Gladys Mary, he is 23 years of age and a coal miner. He states on the census he had been married for 2 years.

Military History

He served with the 9th battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment His medal card states the first theatre of war he entered was the Balkans on 14th September 1915. He died on 9th January 1920 of gas induced bronchitis and is buried in Hucknall Cemetery (grave ref. A.South 632).

Extra Information

Pte. Ezra Bagnall landed at Gallipoli as a reinforcement to 6th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment on 14th September 1915. He later transferred to 8th Battalion of the regiment with which he was gassed. He died as a result on 9th January 1920 and is buried in Hucknall General Cemetery. His father Ezra (senior) enlisted into the Army on 28th August 1915 at Hucknall he was 52 yrs of age and lived at Spring Street, Hucknall. He served wit the service number 30966 with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was discharged from the Army on 14th April 1916 being no longer fit for service.
