Bertie Atkiss was born in 1899 at Hucknall and was the son of Abraham a coal miner and Sarah Atkiss née Stretton of 1a Beardall Street, Hucknall. His father Abraham was born in 1861 at Willenhall, Staffordshire and his mother Sarah Stretton was also born in 1861 also at Willenhall, Staffordshire, they were married in 1884 their marriage was registered in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 9 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were , Thomas b1889, Frank Percy b1892, Beatrice May b1893, George Henry b1896, Bertie b1899 and Lilley Atkiss b1909, all were born at Hucknall In the 1911 census the family lived at 1a Beardall Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire and were shown as Abraham 50 yrs a coal miner conductor, he is living with his wife Sarah 50 yrs and their children, Thomas 22 yrs a coal miner hewer, Frank Percy 19 yrs a coal miner hewer, Beatrice May 18 yrs a dressmaker, George Henry 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Bertie 12 yrs a scholar and Lilly 2 yrs
Private Bertie Atkiss, enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 105779 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was serving with the 7th Battalion The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), when he was killed in action, aged 20, on 24th October 1918. He is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
His brother Private Thomas (Tom) Atkiss, enlisted at Hucknall, he served with the 13th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He landed in France on 22nd December 1915 and was killed in action on 16th July 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
