John Kelly and his wife, Mary Ann, were living in Ranby Road, Babworth in 1901. John was a self employed Wheelwright & Machinist. They lived in Babworth until at least 1905 as all their seven children were born in Ranby, Babworth near Retford, Notts. The first born was William in 1884 followed by Arthur, Dorothy, John, Ita, Edna and Annie. Between 1905 and 1911 the family moved to Sheffield where John Kelley senior tried his hand in the green grocer business and residing at 503 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield. When the Great War was declared, it is known that the eldest child, William enlisted in Worksop, but records are not to hand as to when he arrived there but his mother was resident Worksop in 1914 at the time of his death.
William Kelly of the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters enlisted at Worksop on 27th August 1914 , he occupation was that of a butcher. . As he died in September 1914 and is buried at Plymouth (Efford) Cemetery in the U.K., it is most likely that he never left the country and his death came about for some reason other than in battle.
