Family History

Charles Woolley was born in 1898 in Nottingham and was the son of Susan Woolley née Robson and the late Joseph Worley a bricklayer of 3, Chews Yard, Ronald St., Radford, Nottingham. His father Joseph was born 1852 in Nottingham, he died in 1905 aged 52 yrs at Nottingham, his mother Susan Robson was born in 1856 in Sleaford, they were married on 18th December 1870 in St Stephens Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 12 children 1 sadly died in infancy their children all born in Nottingham were, Joseph b1875, Albert b1878, Lizzie b1873, Nellie b1881, Agnes b1883, Emma b1886, John b1884, Ernest b1888, May b1891 ,Annie b1893, Christopher b1895 and Charles b1898 . In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Queens Cottages, Court Street, Hyson Green, and are shown as Susan 55 yrs a widow, she is living with her children Annie 18 yrs, Chris 16 yrs a joiner Charles 13 yrs an errand boy and May 20 yrs a lace dresser (in fact on this census Susan has listed her husband and all her children, however these have been crossed out except for those currently living with her , presumably by the enumerator.)

Military History

Private Charles Woolley served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 and is buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery grave reference I.L.9

Extra Information

His older brother Private Ernest Woolley enlisted on 7th March 1915 in Nottingham, he was a labourer he served with the 1st battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and was killed in action on 14th October 1914. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France, panel 5Foncquevillers Military Cemetery
