Family History

Samuel Wightman was born in 1894 at Codnor and was the son of William Samuel a coal miner and Althea Wightman née Brown of Langley Mill Derbyshire. His father William Samuel was born in 1865 in Kirkby, his mother Althea Maria Brown was born in 1866 in Codnor . They were married on 5th May 1886 at Codnor and went on to have 10 children, all of whom were born at Codnor, they were George William b1887, Matthew b1889 , Sarah Ann b1892, Samuel b1894, Alice b1897, Jessie b1899, Fanny b1902, Lily May b1904, John Thomas b1906 and Winifred b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at Hob Lane, Codnor , and are shown as William Samuel 46 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Althea 45 yrs and their children, Samuel is 17 yrs and a pit pony driver. He married Gertrude Musgrove (born 14th October 1892) in 1915 at Nottingham and they lived at 18 Byfield Street Radford Nottingham. Commencing 12th March 1917 he widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week

Military History

Rifleman Samuel Wightman, 16th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, enlisted at Ripley in September 1914 he was killed in action on 15th July 1916. He is buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery Longueval
