Claude Turier was born in 1887 at Nottingham and was the son of Frank Alfred a journeyman tailor and Matilda Turier née Hicks of 86 Derby Road, Nottingham. His father Frank was born in 1861 at Cheltenham and his mother Matilda Hicks was born in 1861 at Stroud, Kent, they were married in 1884 at Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Alexander Frank b1882 Cheltenham, their remaining children were born in Nottingham, Alice b1885, claude b1887, Harry b1889, Arthur b1891, Rose b1894, Celia b1895 and George Turier b1898 In 1901 they lived at 35 Ilkeston Road Radford Nottingham. Claude married Harriett Ann Deakin on 1st January 1912 at Sheffield and lived at 14 Bellefield Street, Sheffield they had a daughter Daisy Louvain born 3rd February 1915 at Sheffield. In the 1911 census Claude is living at 17 Thurnscoe, East, Rotherham, he is shown as being 24 yrs single and a boarder, he is a stationary engine driver (underground) he is living with Oscar Barber 32 yrs a colliery labourer and his family. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 86 Derby Road, Nottingham and are shown as Frank 50 yrs a journeyman tailor, he is living with his wife Matilda 50 yrs and their children, Alice Louise 24 yrs a tailoress, Arthur 21 yrs a master tailor, Rose May 18 yrs a music teacher and George 13 yrs a scholar. Following his death his widow Harriett was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week commencing 4th October 1915, this was increased to 30 shillings and 5 pence on 5th September 1918.
Private Claude Turier enlisted on 28th February 1905 at Nottingham, he signed on for 7 yrs with the colours and 3 in the reserves, he was 18 yrs of age. He was posted to the Northumberland Fusiliers with whom he served until 1st September 1908 when he was posted to the Border Regiment. He was posted to the reserves on 12th July 1910 and embodied on the outbreak of war and landed in France on 5th October 1914. Reported missing in action on 26th October 1914 he was officially reported killed in action on 1st December 1914 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial
It will be noted the CWGC give his date of death as 26th October 1914, however his army service record , SDGW and soldiers effects registers all give his death date as 1st December 1914, Presuming he was reported missing on 26th October 1914 and officially confimed on 1st December 1914.
