George Starbuck was born in 1885 at Nottingham and was the son of Thomas a stationary engine man and Louisa Starbuck née Heane of 20 Cobden Street, Radford, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1849 at Kilbourne, Derbyshire, his mother Louisa Heane was born in 1850 at Grantham, they were married in 1872 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Herbert b1879, Thomas B1882, George b1885, , Walter b1889 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family lived at 20 Cobden Street Radford Nottingham and were shown as Thomas 62 yrs a stationary engine man, he is living with his wife Louisa 61 yrs and their children, Herbert 32 yrs a bricklayers labourer, Thomas 29 yrs a bricklayers labourer, George 26 yrs a leavers twist hand and Walter 22 yrs a general labourer.
Private George Starbuck enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was mobilised in August 1914 he landed in France on 25th February 1915. Killed in action, 1st July 1916, aged 31, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
