Frederick Smith was born in 1897 at Nottingham and was the son of John a bricklayers labourer and Charlotte Smith née Morris of 4 Dulwich Road, Radford, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1857 at Farnham, Hampshire and his mother Charlotte Morris was born in 1859 at Plungar, Leicestershire, they were married on 21st July 1888 at St Mary's Church, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, Charlotte brought a child to the marriage Herbert (b1887 at Woodborugh, Nottingham) they went on to have the following children, Bernard b1892, Ada May b1895 and Frederick b1897 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Dulwich Road, Radford, Nottingham and are shown as John 54 yrs a bricklayers labourer, he is living with his wife Charlotte 52 yrs and her son Hebert Morris (shown as step son) Bernard Smith 19 yrs a brass finisher, Ada May Smith 16 yrs a frilling hand and Frederick Smith 14 yrs a jacquard maker.
Lance Sergeant Frederick Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/5th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 27th November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial Louveral: Panel 8
